To Be This
"Make your own Bible.
Select and collect all the words and sentences that
in all your readings
have been to you like the blast of a trumpet."

Curiosity
Pepper has been with us for a little over a month now and sometimes I am so curious about what she thinks. It's impossible not to wonder what her story was before I met her and I can't help but wonder how it compares to the life she has now. Is she happy? Is this better? What does she need?
I am amazed by how well she fits in here. She and Pickle make this really cool team and I keep discovering new ways that's true. Just the other night I noticed that, though Pickle won't share his Kongs, he will let Pepper follow along and lick up his crumbs. Writing that now, I realize that it doesn't sound all that great - though it really cuts down on my vacuuming. Pepper gets his measly crumbs - big whoop. But it serves as a good hour of entertainment for the both of them, so I think it's a semi-fair deal.
We are still figuring out which one of them is the alpha, and sometimes I wonder if it's even necessary to know. But I think it is. I can tell the difference when a dog respects you - human or canine - and when he doesn't. I have the same philosophy with them that I have with my classes - I don't rule with fear. Instead, with the dogs and sometimes with the students, I use what wise parents everywhere have used. I get disappointed in them. They hate that!
(They aren't in trouble here, just tired from playing tackle)
Things are going well. For me. For Pickle. And I think for Pepper too. I just wish she could let me know.

To Be This
"I once decided not to date a guy because he wasn't excited to meet my dog.
I mean, this was like not wanting to meet my mother."

Poem: Ode to a Dog
I can’t write this
with you outside
it occurs to me
that this is weird
weirder than my pile habit
or issues with buffet restaurants
though not as weird as my ex-husband
who put war paint on
to hunt squirrels from the porch
definitely weirder than my beef jerky obsession
and what I did to my hair in the 80s
but not half as strange as
what happened at church camp when I was 12
and so I am a little flummoxed
and overly critical
as is my nature, I guess
analysis and interpretation
not favorable
highlighting the interminable
tattoos of issues
etched where muscle used to be
backbone less
spine wavering
tenuous from tip to tip
tripping on intricate illusions
in on one sided conversations
with the better part of myself
not saying much
in response I nod
it goes unheard
I go on
like a tick
tick
tick
you’ve been gone too long
To Be This
"Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day;
you shall begin it serenely
and with too high a spirit
to be encumbered with your old nonsense."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

To Be This
"The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him
and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too."
~ Samuel Butler

A dog is one of the remaining reasons
why some people can be persuaded to go for a walk.

To Be This
Use what talents you possess.
The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.
